Iowa Representative David Young gives insight as far as proposed percentages for State Supplemental Aid (SSA) for public schools.
Representative Young shares that many of his colleagues in the House have thrown out a range of anticipated numbers, but he’s not comfortable putting a number out yet. Instead, Young reviews what the House was able to accomplish last year.
“This last year, we put forth 3%, which was the largest increase in about 10 years. And I think that was well deserved. And my gut tells me that we’re going to be at about the same (this year), but at the same time, there’s going to be other resources there, such as what the governor wants to do, and what we want to do in the legislature regarding teacher pay.”
According to Representative Young, Governor Kim Reynolds set out an amount of $96 million of new money for teacher pay to increase the base salary. Young wants to reward teachers but stresses the state needs the funds to make that happen.
