With winter weather and temperatures, many bodies of water form ice layers.

Guthrie County Conservation Director Brad Halterman says that during the last winter storms, temperatures dropped enough that large sections of the Middle and South Raccoon Rivers froze over, including under the old dam at Lennon Mills Park. He adds that when ice is thick enough, it allows for skating and ice fishing, though those interested in doing so should always make sure that conditions stay favorable while they are out doing activities, as warm temperatures or fast water can thin out ice.
