A public hearing for a proposed rezoning of privately held property in Jefferson had to be reset by the City Council.

At their most recent meeting on January 23rd, representatives with KCG Development were not going to be present to talk about their 50 rental unit apartments at 403 West Head Street, south of Ace Hardware. City Administrator Scott Peterson says the land needed to be rezoned from light industrial to multi-family residential. He points out that the neighbors in the area were given notice of the public hearing for the Council to consider the rezoning request, and several of them filed a protest. Peterson talks about what that means.

“So what happens then, because of this protest and they met a standard as far as how many percentage of the property would need to file protest then. It changes the standard for passing with the City Council. What would normally pass with a regular majority, now passes by what’s defined as three-fourths of the entire Council. Well what that amounts to it would be four out of five council members voting in favor for the rezoning to proceed.”

The public hearing is scheduled for the next regular City Council meeting at 5:30pm on February 13th.
