Adel-DeSoto-Minburn boys basketball team clawed their way to an exciting overtime win that was full of intensity!
ADM boys entered Tuesday night on a 10-game winning streak, and one of the teams that they beat during the streak pretty handily was North Polk in Adel. The crowd at North Polk High School was in full force, riled up on senior night. The Comets recognized seven seniors on the team and they all came to play.
The game was close from the very start with both teams trading buckets, with North Polk finding themselves up 14-13 at the end of one. The second quarter continued the tug-of-war battle as a late three pointer from ADM’s Hudson Shull put the Tigers on top 23-22 heading into halftime. In the third quarter, ADM’s lead bloomed to 34-24 but North Polk never quit making timely three’s and getting key stops. The Tigers held a 37-31 lead going into what was a frantic fourth quarter.
North Polk outscored ADM 19-13 in the fourth. North Polk’s Reggie Postel ended up fouling out with about three minutes left in the game. ADM Senior Adam Bryte was brilliant from the free throw line as he knocked down most of his attempts. ADM was up 50-45 with about 37 seconds to go before North Polk’s Brady Schulz hit a big three to cut the deficit to two with under 30 seconds to go.
After full court pressure was applied, Grant Rychnovsky was fouled, but the Comets were over the limit, so it was taken from the side out of bounds for the Tigers with 15 seconds. Rhylan Stine-Smith almost was called for a five second call, then got the ball into Hudson Lorensen’s hands, who somehow lost his defender and had a free lane to the rim but missed the layup. The Comets got the rebound with time ticking down and advanced to Drew Owen, who drove all the way to the basket for the game tying layup at 50.
ADM still had one last chance with 3.9 seconds to go. Stine-Smith received the ball needing to go the whole court, then passed it up to Lorensen who barely missed a three at the buzzer. Overtime was in store as the Tigers’ 10-game winning streak and unblemished record inside the Raccoon Valley Conference were in jeopardy.
Overtime saw North Polk score first on a basket from Senior Bradyn Cory, who finished with 10. The Comets led 52-50 with 90 seconds to go before Bryte was able to get back to the free throw line, where he split two. The score was 52-51 as North Polk went inside to Senior Center Graedan Sullivan as his shot attempt was missed then rebounded by Rychnovsky. This set up Stine-Smith to find Hudson Shull in the left hand corner for a huge three to give the Tigers their first lead in the OT period 54-52. After another stop by ADM, there was a nine second differential between the game and shot clock. That meant that North Polk didn’t have to foul but the Tigers found Bryte on the elbow for a jumper, which he hit the clutch shot to essentially put the game away.
ADM won the game 56-52 in overtime, improving to 11-1 overall (9-0 Raccoon Valley Conference) while North Polk falls to 5-10 overall (4-6 RVC).
Lorensen led all scores with 20, followed by Bryte’s 17, and Shull tallied 11. For North Polk, they were led by Postel (14), Owen came off the bench with 11, and Cory notched 10.
North Polk will be hitting the road to Carlisle on Thursday, and ADM returns to Adel Friday night for a fun game against Boone. Catch the Tigers game live on K1079, following the girls game.
