The Iowa Caucuses were held Monday night and former President Donald Trump was the runaway winner for the Republicans in Greene County.
The largest caucus site was the second Jefferson precinct where 101 people braved the below freezing temperatures at the courtroom of the Greene County Courthouse. Jim Andrew was elected a caucus chair and led the process. After a representative spoke about why others should vote for their chosen candidate for president, a secret ballot was conducted and Trump led the way with 60 votes, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was second with 23 votes and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley was third with 15, followed by Vivek Ramasamy and Ryan Binkley. They also chose individuals to serve on the central committee and to be precinct delegates for the county convention.
Those results mirrored the countywide results, with Trump receiving 209 votes from all seven precincts combined, followed by DeSantis with 68, Haley with 61, Ramasamy had 25, Binkley received seven votes, and Asa Hutchinson had one vote. Greene County Republican Chair Seasn Sebourn thanked all 381 Republicans that went out into the cold to make their voices heard and that more than 10 percent of the votes in Greene County that went to re-electing Governor Kim Reynolds showed up for caucus night. He also thanked the volunteers who helped run each caucus site, as well as the hosting sites, and cleaning crews who had the sidewalks and parking area cleared for voters. Sebourn added that he’s excited for the November 5th presidential election.
As for the Greene County Democratic Party, they held an informal coffee event for their one caucus location at Jefferson City Hall prior to the state of the caucus from 4-7pm to give people more access to get their presidential preference card, sign nominations for other candidates, and submit ideas for platforms to run on. Party Chair John Brunow said he is still accepting individuals to serve on the Democratic Party Central Committee, as well as be delegates for the county convention in March.
