With some measurable snow still on the ground, Jefferson residents are reminded of a snow removal ordinance.
Jefferson Building Official and Code Enforcer Chad Stevens says within 12 hours following a snow event, a property owner must have their sidewalk cleared of snow and ice.
“And the City does not have to give notice. This is abatement by emergency because of safety concerns to keep those sidewalks clear. The City can come in without notice. We do generally try to give notice and give an extra 12 to 24 hours for that to be done, but we don’t have to. So please do your best to keep those sidewalks clear. And even, when the wind’s been blowing and those sidewalks will drift back in, you still have to keep getting out there and keeping them cleared off.”
Stevens notes that the fees have increased for city crews to clear the sidewalk with a $200 per hour fee, with a one hour minimum charge that will be placed as a lien on the property. He adds most people have done a good job of this and he appreciates that.
