Eight Greene County wrestlers took apart in Saturday’s Rollin Dyer Invitational at Atlantic High School. The Rams had a twelfth place finish in the 18 team field and placed four individuals among the top six in their respective weight classes.
Junior Brent Dennhardt was fourth at 165 lbs. while senior Jackson Turner (150) and freshman Degan Miller (175) both placed fifth. Junior Gavyn Winters (113) went 2-0 and advanced to the semifinals, then medically forfeited the rest of the day and finished sixth due to an ongoing ankle issue.
Dennhardt’s day was especially challenging as he faced four top five ranked wrestlers including a trio of number one ranked individuals in his last three matches. Those three bouts were all decided by two points, with two of them in overtime. He went 3-2 on the day and 1-2 in those matches against Nebraska’s Class B number 1, Iowa’s 2A number one, and Iowa’s 1A number one. Dennhardt is ranked as high as fourth in 2A and he also recorded a fall vs. Iowa’s 3A fifth ranked wrestler. The 165 lbs. weight class in Atlantic had eight of its 14 competitors ranked in the top eight of various ratings services.
Turner and Miller both went 3-2 on Saturday, and the Rams were without three time State qualifier Gavin Scheuermann due to illness.
The other four Rams did not place in the top eight on Saturday. Their match records Saturday are as follows: Jaron Jacobs (106) 1-3, Crew Conner (138) 2-2, Zeke Binkley (144) 0-2, Marcus Ball (215) 0-2.
Team champion Bondurant-Farrar had 214 points, 1-1/2 better than runner-up Omaha Skutt Catholic. The tournament had at least 45 individuals are highly rated among ranking services in Iowa and Nebraska.
