The new year brings many New Year’s Resolutions and the Adel Public Library has a few new events to ring in 2024.
January typically seems to be a slower time for businesses as they’re able to catch up after the busy November and December months with the holidays. However, for the Adel Public Library, they are looking to ramp up with a couple of new programs getting started. One of which is a Homeschool Book Club designed for elementary students. The program will be held tomorrow starting at 10am. Patron Services Manager Amy Puck, discusses the motivation behind starting the book club for homeschooled students.
“We discovered that there is a very large homeschool population in Adel and they had a need which we are trying to fill, so we create a space for them to attend. We have book clubs for just about everybody else in the library and decided that this would be an ideal program for them, starting with a ‘bring your favorite book’ and then will begin to choose books for the group.”
The library will also begin another new program with Winter Playtime slated for this Friday from 9-11am for ages two through five. Puck says that the event will be a free playtime allowing for kids to choose from toys that will be winter-themed. She asks for parents/guardians to accompany the children as they enjoy a fun time inside out of the cold weather.
According to Puck, Winter Playtime will be a reoccurring event for the next couple of months, although she indicated that no future dates were set. Puck discussed the premise behind this event was to give children the opportunity to be physically active in the cold winter months. Speaking of being active, Friday features another event for kids who are a bit older. The Teen Nerf Battle will happen from 2-4pm for sixth through 12th graders. Puck says many teens love this event.
“Hands down one of our most popular programs. The teams come in, we shut the library down, we give them Nerf guns and they just go to town.”
