Hypothermia and frostbite are dangerous health conditions during the winter months, but there are some illnesses and health related things that come into play more often.

Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf says that the flu and cold are two of the most common illnesses that people may face during the winter months, and that many people contract the illnesses every year. He mentions a few ways to keep from getting them and other diseases during the winter.

“Keeping yourself bundled up. It’s the cold, the flu. Getting plenty of sleep, eating right are the best ways to get through the winter cold season.”

Additionally, Kempf tells Raccoon Valley Radio some other reasons many people end up in the hospital during the winter months are slips and falls. Injuries from slipping and falling don’t always show up right away, but can cause some pain. Kempf says torn ligaments and tendons, and broken bones are the most common injuries people get when they fall.
