Firearm deer hunting seasons are starting to wind down for the year as one of the final activities is underway.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, late muzzleloader season is from December 18th through January 10th. DNR Conservation Officer Aaron Arthur says muzzleloader seasons are still popular in Iowa and are a much more individualized activity.

“Muzzleloader is more of a colder (activity), a lot more antlerless tags used, a lot of people hunt during that time of year. And its muzzleloading rifles, and they can use bows is also legal during late muzzleloader and crossbows is also legal during late muzzleloader (season).”

Arthur mentions that hunters still need to wear a solid blaze orange vest during the late muzzleloader season but tree stands do not need to have blaze orange. He adds that the late split for archery season is also December 18th-January 10th.
