With households celebrating the holiday season with families and friends, there is a good chance there is going to be more home cooked meals, and thus an increased opportunity for fires to occur.

Perry Fire Chief Grason Hill talks about one of the more common problems that can happen in the kitchen when more cooking is involved and sometimes those individuals can get distracted.

“You always want to make sure that whenever you are cooking on your stove, keep a lid handy. Because if a grease fire breaks out, if you can put that lid on there you’ll smother that out right away.”

Chief Hill advises against using flour because that can cause an explosion when used on a grease fire. He points out another helpful safety tip is having a fire extinguisher within a ten foot radius of wherever you are in the kitchen and to know how to properly use a fire extinguisher if needed.
