The US House recently passed legislation that would fund the federal government for a short period of time.

Sources say the bill would fully fund military construction, veterans’ affairs, transportation, housing and the Energy Department through January 19th. The other areas of the federal government would be funded through February 2nd. Iowa’s Third Congressional District Representative Zach Nunn shares his thoughts about how quickly the House responded following no business being conducted on the floor of the House.

“So I’m very happy that we were able to move this forward and we had three weeks where we were debating in the House of Representatives over a new Speaker (of the House) and we got that. We overcame a big feat of being able to get a short term stop gap bill provided that will be passed by the Senate, moved to the President, be signed into law, and prevent a government shutdown, without hurting Americans.”

US Senator Chuck Grassley sees a different mode happening in the Democrat-controlled Senate, which is not to pass all separate appropriation bills that were released by the Senate Appropriation Committee.

“But I believe that there is a desire among the leader of the Senate, Senator (Chuck) Schumer (of New York) to not pass all of the appropriation bills. He likes these omnibus appropriation bills at the end of the year because I think it gives him a lot of power to put in things that normally couldn’t get in.”

The deadline to pass another spending bill and avoid another potential government shutdown is tomorrow.
