With the season kicking off next Monday for the Perry Jayettes on the basketball court, I talked recently with Kevin Klein who is the girls basketball coach for Perry. With girls such as Maci Tunick and Taryn Nehring going out for multiple sports such as volleyball and cross country, along with basketball, I asked him what he thinks of having a lot of girls who are multi-sport athletes on his team and how that can help the basketball team be better prepared to go into the season.
“I think anytime when girls at the high school level play as many sports as they possible can, it helps them in a number of different ways. It helps them to learn to be a good teammate. It helps their hand eye coordination. It helps their ability to understand and learn different concepts that are expected of them when they play a sport. Regardless of the sport, whether it is cross country, volleyball, softball, track, whatever the case may be, there is a lot of different things they can learn from each sport. At some point though we hope to get a lot more girls out for basketball. If there are girls that are sitting around and not doing anything, basketball can help them with their other sports as well as their other sports helping basketball,” Klein said.
Perry will travel to Des Moines Hoover for their season opener on Monday. Tip-off will be at 6 PM. Follow the Perry girls basketball team as we move closer to the start of their season on KDLS, KG 98.9, K 107.9 and on our website at raccoonvalleyradio.com.
