Tuesday’s city/school election churned out a fairly high percentage of voters in Greene County.
According to the Greene County Auditor’s Office, of 6,369 registered voters in the county, 2,278 cast a ballot for a total of 35.77 percent voter turnout. County Auditor Billie Hoskins tells Raccoon Valley Radio she was not surprised by the higher than average number of voters this election cycle.
“We did have the jail bond question and then we did have the PPEL (Physical Plant and Equipment Levy) question for the Greene County School District. I think that definitely made the numbers go up as far as voter turnout. Plus we did have races for Jefferson City Council and the Greene County School District (Board). But then also in some of the other towns we did have races for mayor and (city) council candidates. So hopefully that did bring more people out than it normally would have.”
However, Hoskins points out that in the last city/school election in 2021, there was about the same percentage of voter turnout with about 36 percent, and she believes high voter turnout then was due to the re-vote for Wild Rose Casino to remain in Jefferson. Then in 2019, there was a 23.55 percent voter turnout in that city/school election.
