The Guthrie Center City Council met in regular session Monday night.

The Council approved a liquor license for the Guthrie Center Firefighter’s Association, a fence permit for the 100 block of Main Street and a building permit for the 200 block of Newton Street. They then heard from David Schachtner, who was concerned about signage on one way streets. He told the Council that after almost being hit by someone who came the wrong way down one of the one way streets, he walked around to see how much signage was up on them letting drivers know that they were one way streets. Schachtner said that additional or better signage may be necessary, as some streets only had signage from one direction notifying drivers that they couldn’t drive down the street, but that even the street with the best signage had multiple cases of drivers going the wrong way.

The Council then discussed an ordinance that they had talked about in earlier meetings, and City Clerk Kris Arrasmith noted that she would have the formal ordinance typed up for the next meeting. They then approved renewal of city employee health insurance through Hallmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, before discussing the City’s Source Water Protection Plan. Arrasmith told Raccoon Valley Radio about what the plan entails.

“Especially focusing on the plant cover crops to be put on the well field to help with eliminating erosion and denitrification of the soil. In Monday night’s Council meeting, the City Council came out with a joint statement in conjunction with the Utility Board stating that they agree they’re within the DNR guidelines that are required at the well field, as far as cover crops that can be planted there, as long as they fall under an organic umbrella, they are perfectly fine.”

Arrasmith explained that the plan was adopted in December of 2017, and was drawn up by Region XII Council of Governments in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The City Council then heard reports form the compliance officer, and from Arrasmith, before adjourning the meeting.
