Three libraries in Guthrie County were announced as part of a list of 50 libraries that would be receiving a telescope and lenses from the Omaha Astronomical Society.
Mary J Barnett Memorial Library Director Jerri Hawkins says that she applied to receive the items after receiving an email from the State Library Southwest Iowa District consultant about the opportunity. She adds that libraries from all over Nebraska, and Northwest and Southwest Iowa were able to apply to receive a telescope and eyepiece, and then the 50 winners were chosen at random. Hawkins tells Raccoon Valley Radio her feelings after finding out that Mary J Barnett Memorial Library was included in the 50 chosen libraries.
“I am super excited about it. My son and I just enjoy doing that stargazing and looking at stuff. And I’m just excited to have this opportunity to begin a program that we can help begin those stargazers out there and enjoy learning about that with them. And I’m going to enjoy learning about the telescope with them and just hoping to open up the wonders of the night sky to our community.”
Hawkins explains that the telescope will be available for checkout, allowing interested individuals a chance to further their passion for astronomy. She adds that there is also a guide with tips, and some videos that those who check out the telescope can use to help them. The other two libraries who are receiving telescopes and lenses are the Bayard Public Library and Bagley Public Library.
