A Jefferson man was arrested following an investigation by the Jefferson Police Department.

According to court documents, an officer began an investigation on August 28th into alleged forged checks from an individual overseeing 84-year-old Audrey Hammond’s finances. The officer was notified that two checks were written to 41-year-old Christopher Quirk.

Court documents show that the first check was for $800 from a closed account from Peoples Bank that was deposited on August 14th and the second check was for $400 from an account with Heartland Bank that was deposited on August 28th. On September 17th, the officer interviewed Quirk and he admitted to filling out both checks to himself but denied forging Hammond’s signature. The officer told Quirk that Hammond’s signature on both checks didn’t match the same signature on other documents. Quirk also admitted to acquiring the checks and filling them out at Hammond’s caretaker residence.

Quirk was arrested this past Friday and charged with three Class D Felonies for third degree theft against an older individual, and two counts of forgery; along with an aggravated misdemeanor for identity theft of under $1,500. He was booked into the Greene County Jail. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
