While temperatures have begun to fall, the campgrounds in Guthrie County continue to stay open.

County Conservation Director Brad Halterman says that they are preparing for the cooler months ahead, with winter temperatures starting to creep their way into the area. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio how they prepare the restrooms and shower house at Nations Bridge and Lennon Mills Parks.

“We winterize those every winter. We hold off as long as we can, weather permitting. Generally we look to keep them open till October 15th. If the weather looks like it’s going to keep going to stay above freezing and continue with those little warmer temperatures, we’ll keep them open longer. But as soon as that temperature drops down to the freezing mark, we have to look at winterizing those and closing those up.”

Halterman adds that the restrooms and shower house continue to be usable at this time, but that the conservation department is continuing to watch and make sure temperatures remain high enough to not cause damage. He mentions that electricity does remain usable year round, so that people can continue to camp, should they wish to do so.
