People may wonder how Greene County still has a path to the Class 2A football playoffs despite being 1-3 in District 8 and 3-4 overall. The short answer is because four of the six teams in the district advance to the postseason.

Coach Caden Duncan’s team must win, and a victory still may not be enough. If the Rams defeat Des Moines Christian on the Lions’ field in Urbandale on Friday night by 11 or more points, the playoff possibilities look pretty good. If Southeast Valley (Gowrie) upsets District 8 champion Kuemper Catholic in Carroll, and the Rams win at DMC, Greene County would advance. If Kuemper Catholic gets a win vs. SEV and Greene County wins vs. the Lions, then a three-way tie for the third and fourth spots from District 8 would occur. In that case, the Iowa High School Athletic Association tie-breaking formula would be used, and that’s where winning by 11 points could be to the Rams’ benefit, assuming Kuemper Catholic wins.

You can hear the Rams and Lions Friday night on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com with coverage at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff at 7 o’clock.
