The Greene County School District is looking to establish a new policy to adhere to a new state law.
Greene County School District Superintendent Brett Abbotts says the School Board approved the first reading of two new board policies, including “instructional and library materials inspection and display” and “school library.” He describes the overall goal of these policies as they relate to a newer law that was passed by the Iowa Legislature and signed by Governor Kim Reynolds.
“We will publish on our district website a comprehensive list of all of the books that we have available to students in our libraries that are operated by us. We’re not legally required to have that in place until July 1, 2025. We do have an online system that we do use for our library books. So this won’t be any big task for us really. But once we do have that in place and once that requirement deadline hits then we will have that published on our district website.”
Abbotts points out these policies are only for books that are available in the libraries and if parents want to see the instructional materials that are used in a classroom, the district has a procedure in place that the parent would need to follow. The second and final reading for these policies will be considered by the School Board at their October regular meeting before they go into effect.
