An important program to help individuals with keeping their homes heated this winter has opened up registration.

New Opportunities of Guthrie County Family Development Coordinator Rhonda Huggins says that October 1st was the first day that elderly and disabled individuals could begin signing up for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). She tells Raccoon Valley Radio some of the requirements for those applying for help from LIHEAP.

“We have to do the application every year fresh. So if you did not get an automatic eligibility letter, those went out to certain folks that have a fixed income, and that never changes, if you did not get one of those letters, you will need to come in and fill out the traditional application with us. Bring your proof of income for the last 30 days, be it Social Security, maybe bring a tax statement from last year to prove your income, pay stubs. Whatever you’ve had for income in the last 30 days, those are required, as well as your most current gas and electric bill.”

Huggins mentions that other requirements include Social Security cards, and making an appointment. She explains that all individuals with an income will need to provide these documents and information. Huggins adds that on November 1st, all other individuals that meet the household income guidelines can apply for help from LIHEAP, and will have the same requirements.
