National 4 H Week is coming to class and the local Dallas County program is encouraging enrollment.

Dallas County Extension Youth Coordinator Anne Schlieman says that 4 H provides children with community,  mentors and learning opportunities to develop positive skills.  Those skills range anywhere from learning photography to maintaining a livestock animal. Schlieman says that the youth that enroll for 4H will get out what they put in.

“So it’s just what you put into it is how much time it takes to volunteer or to participate in. Some kids are working their animals 24 hours a day, literally. Other kids. We have some club kiddos that they’re building different display units for our fair in our community building to display pictures. So they’re probably participating at least an hour a night, if not more than that.”

Schlieman says they are in need of adult mentors willing to volunteer their time. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio that they have resources to make every adult mentor successful.

“4H would take an hour. 4H would take a half an hour for volunteering if you’re a leader. We have so many things to help leaders be able to lead their groups, their 4 H groups.”

Schlieman says that during National 4 H Week, they helped raise money on national 4 H giving day, members volunteered at Meals for the Heartland and cleaned the race track while showing their 4H pride at school. For those that want to enroll the information is listed here.
