The Greene County School Board recently approved a new policy and procedure to comply with a state new law.
Earlier this year, the Iowa Legislature passed a bill that was signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds about a student’s preference of what they wanted to be addressed as in a public school. Superintendent Brett Abbotts says the “student disclosure of identity” policy outlines the procedure that should a student want to be called by a different pronoun or name other than what is listed in their student information with the district.
Abbotts points out the process begins with the student expressing the change with their teacher, the teacher then notifies the building principal, and the principal then communicates with the parents and confirms the change is what their child wants. Then a document is signed and the school district staff that need to know will be notified about the change.
“So we are always guided by the Iowa Association of School Boards. We took the policy that they had and copied it verbatim, really, and that’s what we adopted here at Greene County (School District).”
