A former Jefferson resident was recently sentenced to probation for an incident that happened in 2020.
According to court documents, 57-year-old Robert Barnard of Des Moines pled guilty to a Class D Felony for possession of a firearm or offensive weapon by a felon and a serious misdemeanor for his first offense for possession of marijuana. He had a five year prison sentence for the felony charge and a two day county jail sentence for the misdemeanor charge suspended and was placed on probation for one year with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.
The charges stemmed from an incident in January of 2020. A Jefferson Police Officer responded to a call from a resident in the 300 block of West Washington Street claiming Barnard had marijuana and a firearm in his residence. The officer found the drugs and the firearm in Barnard’s bedroom. The officer discovered that Barnard had a prior felony conviction in 2008.
Court documents show that Barnard was also ordered to pay over $500 for fines, surcharges, court costs and court-appointed attorney fees. As per a plea agreement, Barnard’s other charges of a Class D Felony for possession of a firearm or an offensive weapon by a domestic violence offender and a simple misdemeanor for possession of drug paraphernalia were dismissed.
