It is the final week of National Preparedness Month which emphasizes preparing older adults for disasters.

Dallas County Emergency Management Agency Director AJ Seely says that when someone is putting together a preparedness plan when a disaster strikes they need to take into account older adults can have mobility problems and medical concerns. Seely says that some older adults are medically dependent on electricity which needs to play a factor into the building of a kit.

“So sometimes that means having a small generator at home. Sometimes it means some extra oxygen bottles, a whole different list of different types of electrically dependent medical needs that could exist CPAp(Continuous positive airway pressure), but good rule of thumb, identify those and then figure out what you can do to mitigate against what they rely on.”

National Preparedness Month is a campaign in September that emphasizes the importance of being ready when a disaster strikes.
