The Iowa Department of Natural Resources Volunteer Day for state parks across Iowa is coming up.
Iowa DNR Natural Resource Tech 1 Reaghan Oakleaf tells Raccoon Valley Radio that from 3-5pm on September 30th, they’ll be working to do some regular upkeep for their nursery trees.
“Pretty them up, make sure they’re growing healthy and we don’t have any issues. A lot of the times we get unwanted growth in there, so we have to remove that along with our mulch kind of gets pushed in towards the base of the tree, and it’s something we don’t want to see because it ruins, kind of their growth.”
Oakleaf mentions that volunteers should dress appropriately, with t-shirts, pants and a pair of work gloves, but that is just her suggestion. She explains that to start out, they’ll go and look over all the trees to decide which ones need work done, and then go back afterwards and clean, trim and move any mulch that needs to be moved.
