A long time Greene County employee is now the new auditor.

Billie Jo Hoskins was appointed to be the new Greene County Auditor earlier this year when Jane Heun announced her retirement. The 32 year veteran grew up in Polk City and graduated from North Polk High School in 1984. She then went onto Des Moines Area Community College for a business degree. Hoskins points out in 1991 she met her husband, who was from Greene County, and she describes how she migrated up to the area.

“I was working for an insurance company in Des Moines and I knew I needed a job closer to here because my husband is from here and we farm. There was an opening in the (Greene County) Treasurer’s Office and I interviewed with (then County Treasurer) Donna Lawson and she hired me basically not knowing who I was. The only reason she hired me, I think, is because she knew who my in-laws were. So that’s how I got my start in county government.”

Then from 1991 to 1998, Hoskins worked in the Greene County Treasurer’s Office when the payroll position in the auditor’s office was open and former County Auditor Mike Piepel asked her to interview for the job. Hoskins has been in the auditor’s office since then. She talks about her favorite part of working in the auditor’s office.

“I just really enjoy working with the public. We don’t see a lot of public, but I just hope that they get a good experience, that we’re friendly, that we’re personable, and they leave thinking, ‘That was a good experience.’”

Hoskins says because the Greene County Board of Supervisors appointed her to fill the vacancy of county auditor, the position will be up for election in November of 2024 and she is committed to running for her first full term as county auditor.
