There will be a celebration of indigenous culture in Dallas County this weekend.
The Dallas County Conservation Board is hosting a celebration called “Prairie Awakening- Prairie Awoke,” from 3 to 9pm on Saturday at Kuehn Conservation Area in Earlharm. Outreach Coordinator Sarah McKeever says that this is a celebration people look forward to every year. McKeever says this year’s theme is “All of my Relatives,” which means they are inviting back people who have been really involved with this celebration in the past that include Dallas Chief Eagle who will perform a hoop dance, Bryan Akipa who is a native flute player and Mike HeCrow will share his knowledge of the prairie’s plant relatives.
“This is just a celebration of land and indigenous culture and it is just a beautiful way to celebrate both those things.”
The DCCB encourages people to bring their own lawn chairs, and they note there will be a food truck there. If the event faces inclement weather it’ll be moved to Earlham High School. The event is free and open to the public.
