A Des Moines television station was in Jefferson last week ahead of tomorrow’s RV TV appearance leading up to Saturday’s Iowa at Iowa State football game. WHO-TV sent sports reporter Mark Freund to talk to some locals about the Jefferson-Scranton/Paton-Churdan football team of 1999 that started with a 1-3 record and finished 8-4 mark, knocking off third ranked Denison-Schleswig and number one Harlan Community in the playoffs, en route to playing in the Class 3A semifinals in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. That story will be featured on the TV stations’ Tuesday Sports news.
Freund said due to the popularity of RV TV, communities actually have to apply to be chosen as one of the daily stops the sports crew makes. He added that in each community they visit, they feature a particular sports story from that school or community, which is where the idea about the ’99 team being featured came from. Former standout player on that team, Matt Lautner, has been instrumental in recent years of keeping the memory of that season alive. In fact, on Tuesday night at 7, Sierra Community Theatre will show the documentary about the 1999 Rams that Lautner spearheaded.
