The heat wave has ended in Iowa, but did any of the counties in the Raccoon Valley Radio area break record highs?

According to the National Weather Service from Tuesday through Thursday, the three hottest days during the excessive heat warning, temperatures came close but did not break records in Greene, Dallas and Guthrie counties. The closest day was on Wednesday, where the record highs for Greene County was set in 1894 at 97 degrees, in Guthrie County it was 99 degrees in 1936, and Dallas County was 97 degrees in 1948. All three counties reached 96 degrees without the heat index on Wednesday.

Temperatures return to the average monthly highs of the lower 80s starting today through the majority of next week before 90 degrees return near the end of the week. The temperatures below are the records and what year they were set for 8/22-8/24 and in the parenthesis is it the temperatures from this past week.

Jefferson:

  • 8/22 – 98 degrees in 1914 (90)
  • 8/23 – 97 degrees in 1894 (96)
  • 8/24 – 105 degrees in 1936 (98)

Perry: 

  • 8/22 – 99 degrees in 1914 (93) 
  • 8/23 – 97 degrees in 1948 (96)
  • 8/24 – 106 degrees in 1936 (98)

Guthrie Center:

  • 8/22 – 100 degrees in 1914 (93)
  • 8/23 – 99 degrees in 1936 (96)
