Football is back under the Friday night lights for the Iowa High School Athletic Union.
The Dallas Center-Grimes has not won their opening night game since the 2020 season when they defeated Pella by a score of 30 to 6. The Mustangs will put their stamp on a new year when they play Gilbert, from the Raccoon River Conference, at 7:30pm tonight at Gilbert High School. Both teams are coming off of losing seasons last year, the Mustangs finished the season (2-7) and the Tigers went (1-7).
Dallas Center-Grimes does have productive key players returning players to look out for. Senior Ty Mikkelsen is coming off a 2022 campaign where he threw for almost 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns. On the defensive end side of the ball, senior Dayne Mauk is returning after recording six sacks and 14 tackles for loss.
Gilbert will bring back their leading rusher last season. Junior Will Hawthorne touched the ball 113 times and ran for 439 yards and five touchdowns in his sophomore season.
