The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating an alleged spill into the Raccoon River in Greene County.
According to the DNR, they were notified Monday morning about discolored water in one of the tributaries that feeds into the North Raccoon River two miles east of Cooper in Greene County. The DNR reports that the discoloration was first observed this past Friday. The black, pooled water was seen in several areas behind beaver dams. The affected stream has low flow and no dead fish were detected. Field test results by the DNR showed elevated levels of ammonia.
Water samples have been sent to the State Hygienic Laboratory and it is suggested that there should not be swimming and recreation activities in this area until additional information is known about the issue, as the investigation is ongoing at this time.
The DNR is asking that if anyone has information about this incident to contact the DNR Field Office 4 in Atlantic, at 712-243-1934. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
