Greene County’s high school cross-country runners won’t have their first meet for another 10 days, but the Rams get the volleyball and football seasons underway this week. The start of high school Fall sports coincides with extremely hot weather in Iowa. Volleyball opens the season tomorrow at Dallas Center-Grimes for a quadrangular with the host Mustangs, Mason City, and Ballard (Huxley). The home portion of the volleyball season starts on Thursday for the Rams in Jefferson vs. Ft. Dodge St. Edmond. Fortunately, both the DC-G and Greene County gyms are air-conditioned.
Ram football opens the season on Friday at Carroll Athletic Field vs. the Class 3A Carroll Tigers and unfortunately, there is no dome to play under, so the acton will be out in the heat. There is a JVR game set for 4:15 p.m. Friday, followed by the varsity contest at 7 p.m., which will be broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Greene County is seeking its sixth straight winning football season. The Rams have had seven or more wins in each of the previous five seasons including back-to-back 8-2 campaigns in 2021 and ’22 that included Class 2A District 8 Championships.
