The Stuart People Available for Library Service (PALS) are ready for their next event in their Speaker Series.

On August 26th at 10am, the PALS will be bringing in John Liepa, who will give his presentation “How Iowa Met Baseball – the Myths, the History, the Players.” Liepa was a Professor Emeritus of History and Political Science at Des Moines Area Community College from 1972-2010. His presentation will explore the myths of baseball’s origins, its early history and evolution, and the role the Civil War played in spreading its popularity. PALS member Kathy Johnson shares a bit on the presentation.

“Now, when he comes he’s going to dress up as one of these major league players. I think he dresses up as Calvin McVay, Iowa’s oldest professional baseball player.”

Liepa will also be bringing his extensive collection of baseball memorabilia and artifacts for attendees to see, including baseball cards from the 1860’s all the way up to the 1950’s, and representations of Iowa’s 222 Major League players.
