The Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce bought another successful town celebration to the community of Adel.

The 44th annual Adel Sweet Corn Festival was a two day celebration over the period of Friday and Saturday. Over the course of the festival, community volunteers  shucked 6.5 tons of sweet corn and gave it away for free to community members. The festival announced Myla Sara as the sweet corn princess, and recognized Rich Hughes as the 2022 Citizens of the Year in Adel.  Hughes used to be Sweet Corn King Cooker for many years along with being an active member of the Historic Preservation Commission, overseeing grant applications for historic business improvements and the placement of more than 20 historical plaques. Hughes told Raccoon Valley Radio that he was surprised he was recognized as the citizen of the year because the others nominated had a rich tradition of serving to.

“The other finalist were Jan Tetrick and Dixie Riner. And we don’t we do this not to be recognized and it’s always nice to be recognized, but we really don’t be involved as a community to be recognized. And but we do it because I think we enjoy each other, you know, enjoy the activities. And Jan has been involved with a lot of educational. She’s retired teacher and Dixie Riner and her husband Bill have been involved with a lot of community activities over the years.”

The festival also had musical performances from Jesse and the Medicine Man and the band Gimmick along with a tumbling performance, car shows, volleyball tournament, 5k run and walk among other fun festive events.
