The Food and Drug Administration just approved a new protection that can potentially protect youth from a contagious virus.

Dallas County Health Department Navigation Coordinator Ann Cochran says that the new vaccine called “Bayfortus,” which is another tool to help infants up to two-years-old fight the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Cochran says that RVS causes people to have lower respiratory illness that is generally mild, but in some cases can lead to pneumonia and bronchitis. Cochran notes that the virus causes more danger for infants and older adults.

She tells Raccoon Valley Radio what this vaccine does to monoclonal antibodies approved to protect all infants through their first RSV season.

It has this activity that goes up against the RSV in our bodies and it is safe for babies, which is wonderful. You know, and and really, there’s a lot of prevention steps for everyone besides getting a shot. If you feel any cold symptoms, please avoid contact with other people, especially babies. We all see a baby. We want to hug them or kiss them. If you’re not feeling well, please, please, please stay away. Don’t share anything.”

Cochran mentions that people should talk to your healthcare team about the RSV injection. She says vaccines are also available for anyone 60 years of age and older.
