The Iowa High School Athletic Association recently announced the top academic member school teams for the 2022-23 school year.
Guthrie County was represented well, as all three schools had at least one team named either Distinguished in Academic Achievement or Excellence in Academic Achievement. Those teams in the excellence category had a combined Grade Point Average of 3.0-3.25, and those in the distinguished category had a combined GPA of 3.26-4.0.
Adair – Casey / Guthrie Center had three teams named to the distinguished category, with Collin Shawgo’s cross country team earning a 3.43 GPA, Lance Kading’s boys basketball team earning a 3.38 GPA, and Cody Matthewson’s track and field team earning a 3.26. Panorama’s cross country team led by Gregg Thompson was also named to the distinguished category with a 3.74 GPA.
AC/GC also had four teams make the excellence category, with Jennifer Betterton’s football cheerleading squad earning a 3.15 GPA, Lane Rumelhart’s wrestling squad earning a 3.08 GPA, Becky Wahl’s basketball cheerleading squad earning a 3.06 GPA, and Matthewson’s football team earning a 3.04 GPA. For West Central Valley, Jim Lindsay’s football squad also made it to the excellence category, with a 3.1 GPA.
