The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Monday in regular session.

The Board was informed that the language for the new county jail bond referendum must be submitted to the Greene County Auditor’s Office by September 21st in order for the estimated $9.9 million measure to be on the ballot for voters for the November general election. Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams said the total amount of $9.9 million is a decrease from last year’s failed vote of $12.6 million. He told the Board the main changes were eliminating five cells and the facility to have a flat roof instead of a peaked roof.

The Board then approved a 28E agreement with the Greene County Secondary Roads Department and Osceola County for Osceola County to rent two dump trucks for $8,100 per month for ten months initially. County Engineer Wade Weiss said the agreement was due to the delay that Osceola County had with getting their new dump trucks delivered.

The Board also held a discussion about a request for a designation for fallen military veterans, including Army Captain Matthew Neilson to name the bridge over the Raccoon River on US Highway 30 that is west of Jefferson, and Lance Corporal Benjamin Carman to name Iowa Highway 4 from US Highway 30 to Iowa Highway 141. A representative with the Army Survivors Outreach Services said the signs have no cost to the taxpayers and there must be an approved resolution by the Greene and Guthrie County Boards of Supervisors and the Jefferson City Council before the application can be submitted to the Iowa Department of Transportation for consideration. The Board agreed to consider the resolution at next week’s meeting.

Finally, Weiss told the Board that the 4.5 miles of County Road E-57 from Iowa Highway 4 to County Road P-14 is closed starting Monday for the asphalt overlay project.
