The state of Iowa will be facing some of the hottest temperatures it has seen all year this week.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Alexis Jimenez says that the two days that heat will cause the most discomfort are tomorrow and Thursday. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio what kind of temperatures Central Iowa will be expecting.
“Wednesday we’ll see temperatures start getting into mid and upper 90’s. Thursday, and we have places especially south, that can be approaching 100 degrees by the afternoon. And to add to that factor will also be the heat index values, where we could see heat indices both days around 100 degrees, and even possibly approaching 105 by Thursday afternoon.”
Jimenez mentions that the later part of both days will be where people will feel the heat the most, with the hotter hours starting in the late afternoon and going into the evening. She adds that the highest temperatures will most likely be seen around 3pm. Jimenez advises people to limit outdoor activity, but gives some advice to those who have to be outside.
“Definitely just stay hydrated, take some frequent breaks. If you’re outside during those peak hours of the day, wear some sunscreen of course, protect yourself. Spend some time in some shade or an air conditioned space.”
With the excessive heat, Raccoon Valley Radio listening area residents should heed the advice from Jimenez. Doing so could help keep you from developing a heat related illness like heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
