A Michigan Man is facing drug charges after a traffic stop last week.

An Adair Police Officer initiated a traffic stop after observing a black Lexus traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 at roughly 91 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone. The vehicle pulled over in Adair after exiting the interstate, and handed the officer what was later discovered to be a fake ID. While talking to the driver, who was identified as 43-year old Caleb Root, the officer asked if there was any marijuana in the vehicle, to which Root said he had smoked some the day before, which is why it smelled like the drug. The officer informed Root that the smell was enough for probable cause to search the vehicle.

While searching the car, the officer found a small container of marijuana wax, a pipe for smoking the wax, a total of 336 grams of marijuana and rolling papers, and a small container that contained two white rock substances that tested positive for methamphetamine. The officer also found an Excedrin bottle with four orange oval pills that were identified as a schedule 2 controlled substance, and a wallet with Root’s actual ID.

When the officer told him what he found, Root admitted the marijuana and pills were his, but not the methamphetamine. Root was arrested and taken to the Adair County Jail on one count of failure to affix drug stamp, a Class D felony, three counts of possession of a controlled substance, which is a serious misdemeanor, and providing false identification and possession of drug paraphernalia, both simple misdemeanors.
