A Vietnam era helicopter will be at the Iowa Aviation Museum/Greenfield Municipal Airport on July 30th.
YL-37, a Sikorsky UH34D helicopter will land between noon and 1pm and stay for the afternoon. This helicopter was flown in the Republic of Vietnam from 1965-68 by Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron Three Six Two, who were known as the “Ugly Angels.” The vessel has over fifty patches covering damage from bullets and a rocket attack. YL-37 is the only Marine UH-34D with a combat record that survived and returned home, even after being disabled on a mission and recovered by another helicopter.
The YL-37 Group Foundation supports the helicopter, which has become a flying tribute to Vietnam Veterans and all of America’s Armed Forces. There is no charge to attend the event, but donations will be greatly appreciated and gladly accepted to help maintain YL-37 and keep it flight-worthy. The museum will also be open from 1-5pm with regular admission. Plans for the event are subject to change based on weather and other uncontrollable circumstances. If you have any questions, call the Iowa Aviation Museum at 641-343-7184.
