The US House and Senate committees are still working on drafting a farm bill.
US Senator Chuck Grassley says he had a conversation with Senator Debbie Stabenow, who is the Chairwomen of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry and Stabenow told him that the bill’s completion by the end of September would be unlikely to happen. Grassley says that Stabenow told him that she was certain that a five year farm bill would be completed by the end of the year. Grassley says that would mean they would not have to use a one year extension of the current farm bill.
“Because a five year farm bill is better for farmers instead of going from year to year so they have more certainty. I think maintaining crop insurance is number one. If there’s more money available for agriculture research and foreign market sales, I think that’s very important. I think one of the most controversial things is going to be the work requirements for food stamps.”
The current farm bill law is set to expire on September 30th.
