The Dallas County Health Department is starting to promote scheduling students’ back-to-school wellness exams.
Health Navigation Coordinator Ann Cochran says that health clinics in the month of August will start to get extremely busy with school approaching. She encourages parents or guardians to schedule their well-child exam appointments. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio that parents or guardians need to ask their physician which immunizations their children will need for school.
“Just to note, here in Iowa, if you have a child entering kindergarten, third grade or 12th grade, they are required to be caught up on certain shots. And Iowa law states that all students in licensed child care must also show proof of immunization. And this is just to make sure that we not only protect your child, but your child doesn’t expose the other children to serious diseases.”
Cochran notes that there are a number of free clinics that do free well-child exams along with free immunizations for students. She says to call the Dallas County Health Navigation Office to learn more.
