Greene County ended it’s 2023 high school baseball season last night with a Class 3A Substate 2 quarterfinal loss in Alleman to second ranked North Polk.The 6-1 loss put the Rams at 3-20 to end the campaign while the Comets advance to Monday’s semifinals at 25-5. The Greene County softball season continues in Jefferson tonight vs. Southeast Valley (Gowrie) for a 3A Region 3 semifinal at the City Diamond on E. Lincolnway at 7 p.m. on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.

Light rain fell on Friday prior to the Rams meeting the Comets, but it wasn’t enough to hinder field conditions and it did not rain at all during the contest. Sophomore Noah Hinote pitched well for the Rams, but took the loss. NP scored four runs in the second inning and single runs in the third and fifth. Four Greene County errors hurt the Rams’ cause and the only hit for Greene County came from Hinote with two outs in the seventh inning when he singled to left. Greene County struck out 15 times vs. two NP pitchers. Starter Reece Wrage fanned 11 in five innings and the lone base runner drew a walk. Drew Owen fanned four over the final two innings. Greene County’s run was scored in the sixth inning when Dakota Mobley was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored an a ground out by Camden Jacobs. Seniors Matthew Hovick, Brayden Roberts and Mobley played their final game for the Rams.
