The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has released postseason softball pairings and Greene County will start tournament play at home in Jefferson. Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams will host Cherokee in the opening round of Class 3A Region 3 softball on Thursday, July 6 at 7 p.m. from the City Diamond on E. Lincolnway. Several years ago the Rams made the long trip to face the Braves to start the postseason and now the shoe is on the other foot. Greene County enters action at the Boone Tournament today with a 17-5 record and number 13 ranking from the IGHSAU while Cherokee has had difficulty picking up victories.
The winner between the Rams and Braves will face the OABCIG (Ida Grove)/Southeast Valley (Gowrie) winner in Jefferson on Saturday, July 8 at 7 p.m. Saydel (Des Moines), Harlan Community, Humboldt, and Algona are on the other side of the Region 3 bracket with the Region 3 title game set for the home field of the highest remaining team from the IGSHAU rankings. The June 22 rankings have Saydel the highest rated team in the Region at number 7 despite Greene County winning on the Eagles’ home diamond earlier this month. The two teams will meet on June 28 in Jefferson in a regular season contest to determine the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference champion.
The Rams play Clarke (Osceola) at 11 a.m. today at Boone, then meet Dowling Catholic (West Des Moines) this afternoon at 3 o’clock.
