The Dallas County Conservation Board will celebrate the actual beginning of summer with an evening program.
The Board will have a Summer Solstice Sunset Celebration from 8 to 9pm on Thursday at the astronomical clock atop of a ridge at Hanging Rock Park in Redfield. Outreach Coordinator Sarah Gilchrist says that during this they will observe and celebrate the sunset of the summer solstice, which is the point where the sun appears to reach its highest point in the sky for the year.
“And sometimes, too, we get to see some birds come and I mean, it’s just a great time to come out there. And it’s actually quite a popular program that people enjoy. And just even though school’s been out for a few weeks, it’s the actual beginning of summer.”
Only two solstices occur annually; those are on June 21 being summer and December 21 being winter. The event is free and no registration is required unless you want to be notified if the program gets canceled.
