Greene County played softball in the Denison-Schleswig Tournament in Denison on Saturday against two Class 4A programs from the Hawkeye 10 Conference. The Rams met the host Monarchs in the first game and won 1-0 in eight innings, then faced Glenwood and lost by a final of 8-1.

Coach Tom Kennedy’s team is now 13-5 and the win vs. D-S stretched the winning streak to seven in a row, which ended with the loss to Glenwood. The Rams played 15 innings Saturday with the offense having just four total hits and two runs scored, and both totals uncharacteristically low.

Emma Hoyle pitched all eight innings of the victory vs. the Monarchs, who fell to 10-8, and she was about as good as it gets. The senior allowed no runs on one hit with 15 strikeouts in eight innings with no walks or batters hit with pitches. Hoyle and Paige Teeples each singled and Chanlyn Cunningham had the only run driven in.

Glenwood is 10-7 after their win vs. Greene County. Eighth grader Alaina Heard pitched and took the loss. Daniele Madsen is normally the number two pitcher, but she is injured. Heard allowed eight runs on eight hits with five earned runs in six innings. Heard walked three batters and hit one with a pitch while recording six strikeouts. She trailed by just a 2-0 score after five innings. The only Greene County hits were an Emma Stream double and RBI, and a single for Chanlyn Cunningham.

The Rams, ranked number 14 in Class 3A, are home in Jefferson on Monday in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play vs. West Marshall (State Center) with the varsity game set to begin at 7:30 p.m. The Rams have just one conference loss with four league games yet to play.
