Off to its best start since 2015, the Greene County varsity softball team visited Monroe and PCM on Wednesday night in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play. Coach Tom Kennedy’s team won the game by a 3-2 final and is now 11-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference. PCM ended the night 8-6 overall and 6-4 in the HOIAC. The Mustangs won 6-3 in Jefferson over the Rams early in the season and that’s the lone HOIAC loss for Greene County.

The Rams built a 3-0 lead last night with a first inning run and two in the fifth. PCM countered with single runs in the fifth and seventh. Winning pitcher Emma Hoyle had another big night with only four hits allowed, one walk, no batters hit with a pitch, and nine strikeouts. The Rams had two errors and only one PCM run was earned.

Hoyle also was good at the plate with four hits in four appearances that included a double, three singles, and one run batted in. The Rams had 10 hits and Hoyle’s double was the only one for extra bases. Olivia Shannon and Alexa Peters each singled twice and Peters drove in a run. Emma Stream singled and had one RBI and Paige Teeples had a base hit as the five seniors accounted for all the hits.

The Rams have won five straight and the winning streak is on the line tonight at Rogers Park north of Ft.Dodge vs. non-conference opponent St. Edmond, ranked number 6 in Class 1A. Coverage on KG98 starts shortly after 7 p.m. with first pitch set for 7:30 p.m.
