Landus Cooperative is moving forward with a project that they are hoping creates better efficiencies for its farmer members.
President and CEO Matt Carstens says they are going to build a new grain facility between Paton and Boxholm that will also consolidate its sites in Dana, Paton, Boxholm and Beaver. He points out the location of the new facility is almost in the middle of all of those sites and while he understands the difficulty of having to shut down these facilities, he believes this will help create better efficiencies with the changing times in agriculture where having a facility every 5-10 miles is no longer sustainable.
“And for a lot of reasons and some of it is the expansion of our farmers. You think about the size of a combine, let alone multiples of those in a field, the ability of semis to haul away with that speed. And then you look at when we talk about the insights and what we’ve got to do to connect to the consumer. And really pool that into one big facility to put on rail or sell to a Louis Dreyfus, or an AMVC feed mill in Hamlin, all of that’s got to be taken into account, and our farmers are alleviating to the times for the most part and we’ve got to stay pace with them, whether it’s on agronomy or grain.”
Carstens anticipates having the new facility ready by the 2025 harvest season.
