An early Saturday morning structure fire causes injuries to at least one person in Jefferson.

Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio they responded to a call of a structure fire at 3:51am at 402 North Vine Street. When firefighters arrived on scene, Williams says a mattress was on fire in one of the three bedrooms of the home. He notes they were able to put out the fire before it got to other parts of the home, although throughout the residence there was smoke and water damage.

Williams says while it’s unclear at this time how many people were in the bedroom, at least one individual suffered suspected smoke inhalation and was to be taken to Greene County Medical Center. He adds that while the exact cause remains under investigation, the suspected cause of the fire was a smoking device.

The Jefferson Police Department, Greene County Sheriff’s Office and Greene County Ambulance assisted at the scene.
